When I tell people that i make clothing, towels and linens with organic cotton many of them roll their eyes and ask the question: "What is organic cotton?" or "What is the difference between organic cotton and conventional cotton?" I love this opportunity to help people understand that their consumer choices have real environmental impacts. I think the term "conventional" is very misleading. i prefer to refer to the non-organic farming as "chemical farming" I think this is a much more accurate descriptive term than conventional.
Chemical farming practices are killing Florida waters! On the Planet there are over 500 oceanic dead zones documented. Chemical Fertilizers are the primary cause of these. Run off of fertilizers from farms ends up in the oceans, lakes and gulfs and causes huge algae blooms. The Algea depletes the water of oxygen choking the fish, turtles and other marine life to death.
This year there is an unprecedented amount of sea turtles, Goliath grouper, and other fish and birds are washing up dead on the west coast of Florida. The algae blooms, caused by unconscious farming, are also a direct threat to humans. Many people have adverse respiratory reactions to Algae. The local tourist economies of Florida are also hit. The water is disgusting and there is a very bad smell. Sport fishing is also devastated.
So what can an individual do about this local and global problem? You can sign petitions and hold demonstrations, all of which are well and good, but the most important thing you can do is refuse to buy non-organically farmed goods and products.
At YOGiiZA we are very passionate about our mission to give people organic choices that are instrumental in the fight to save Mother Earth.
Choosing organic is a step on the enlightened path. The choices you make manifest the Planet you choose.
